There is a version of this post where I get all philosophical and start it off with some polished explanation about our commitment to quality and how we never compromise.
As true as any of that may be, I feel icky when I pretend to be able to button things up in statements of grand learnings and words of wisdom.
The real story is this: the latest season's sample for the beloved Fastpacker Fleece was ready, I held it in my hands and looked at the shape, put it on, moved around in it, and something in my gut just said no. It was close, not super obvious, but there was a visceral feeling of no. Not the perfect fit I've personally fallen in love with.
So then I had to make a call that I knew was going to cost us time, money, and a lot of restless nights.
We stopped moving forward into production.
A Little History First
Alpine Fit started in Alaska. We made everything ourselves, in-house, before COVID, through COVID, and in those early years when the business was still finding its footing. Making things ourselves meant we had eyes and hands on every single piece that went out. I knew exactly what was leaving because I was part of making it from design to finished packaged product.
We've since built relationships with contractor partners in California, and we still do a small amount of sewing up in Alaska too. All of our gear is Made in the USA, and the Fastpacker Fleece goes even further than that. The Polartec® Alpha™ Direct 90 fabric itself is Made in the USA. Which is truly special in this day and age.
But moving to contractor partners also meant building trust in our processes in a different way. You're handing something off. You're communicating through patterns and samples and tech packs, and meetings and phone calls instead of being in the room (all the time) yourself. And it turns out, just like if you see a problem starting in your own factory, you have to be willing to stop everything and speak up when something isn't right, even when it's inconvenient. And it's always inconvenient to stop anything in a growing small business!
What Happened with This Season's Samples
When the Fall 2026 Fastpacker Fleece samples came in this June, I was super keen to get things approved and moving forward. We have people waiting on this style. It's one of our bestsellers, and it's one of my personal favorites. I live in it, I travel in it, I wear it hiking, through airports, on road trips, doing errands when I want to feel put-together in an outdoorsy and on-brand way ;).
That particular fit, that slightly modern, shorter, boxier shape, is a big part of why it works so well. It doesn't feel like an old-school basic mid-layer that is meh. It feels current; it looks intentional. When you put it on, you feel good, and that feeling is carried with you through wherever you wear it.
The samples didn't have that “je ne sais quoi.”
It's hard to explain in a technical way because it wasn't one thing. It was just a feeling. The proportions were slightly off. The length wasn't quite right. It didn't give me that just right feeling in the moment I was looking for, and I've learned after years of doing this that if I'm not getting that moment, the people wearing it won't either.
The Difficult Call
Stopping a production run is not a small thing when you're a small business.
I want to be straightforward about this because I think there's sometimes a romantic idea that doing the right thing is easy when you care, and doing the right thing is what you built your business on. And easy when you are small and agile. It's not. It is hard to do the right thing when it often causes big delays. If you don't have your bestsellers in stock, you don't have what you need to keep the lights on. That's just the reality of business.
But, the other reality is that if the product isn't right, it also matters. You can have inventory, but if people put it on and it doesn't give them that feeling, they might return it, or worse, they won't come back. And the people who already love Alpine Fit, who have been with us for years, who trust that when we make something it's been thought about carefully, they deserve the real thing. Not a version that's almost right.
So we went back through everything. The original patterns, the first production run samples, the feedback we'd gotten over time, the notes from different fittings on different body types. We worked closely with our pattern maker and the factory team and we made some refinements. Then we went through another round of sampling with multiple size samples.
Then, a lot of measuring, a lot of trying things on different sizes and different bodies and asking questions and being honest about the answers.
What We Landed On
Here's what the Fastpacker Fleece is supposed to be, and what this new production run delivers:
That slightly shorter, boxier modern silhouette that works with everything from hiking pants to jeans. A little more length in the larger sizes, but not disproportionate sleeve length. A generous hood that actually stays put when you turn your head instead of riding up your shoulders. Stretch mesh binding at the hem, cuffs, and hood opening instead of thick elastic, so it breathes and dries as well as the rest of the garment. Thumb loops, a ponytail exit, and the Polartec® Alpha™ Direct 90 fabric, which is truly special material we work with. And you know me, I am a huge fabric nerd!
When the revised samples came back and I tried them on, I got that feeling. Yes! This is it.
That's what we're producing.
Why I'm Telling You This
I don't share this to make Alpine Fit sound heroic. We made a decision, we corrected the course, and now we're moving forward. That's not exceptional, that's just how it works.
But I do think there's something worth saying. I am going to try my best to sum this up without sounding too cheesy!: Listening is hard in practice. It requires actually stopping when something isn't right instead of talking yourself into moving forward because moving forward is easier, and faster! It requires trusting the people around you and also trusting yourself. And sometimes it requires making a call that costs you in the short term because you believe the long-term version of it is worth it. And if I get it “right” it could open up even more possibilities that I can presently only dream of. And it is. We just opened these up for pre-order and we are so excited to see how many of you are excited and ready to jump on this next limited batch! Thank you.
A lot of you have told us how much you love the Fastpacker Fleece. You've told us about the trips you've worn it on, how well it performs, how surprising the fabric is in the best way, how great it makes you feel, the way it packs into a bag and still looks like something you'd actually want to wear when you pull it out at the other end. That feedback is so helpful to me. It's the reason I made the call I made.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
To bring this story all the way up to the present: all of this happened over the past few months and was resolved before having the confidence to open up pre-orders. The revised samples were approved, the production run is underway, and we are on track for the new Fastpacker Fleeces to ship in mid-September.
The best version of this fleece is on its way. I can't wait for you to have it.
